When Dr. Aditya Nagrath founded Elephant Learning Math Academy in 2016, his vision was to change the way the world teaches mathematics. As a mathematician, software engineer, entrepreneur, and parent, he turned his vision into a reality. Students around the globe are using the system for just 30 minutes a week for three months to learn a full year of math.
Elephant Learning is the gamification of a proven math curriculum. “Our online, automated system teaches mathematics as a language, starting with counting and continuing through Algebra,” said Dr. Nagrath. “The system covers the essential topics that once learned, make it easy to understand the teacher or parent within a classroom setting. Ultimately, the confidence a student builds while learning math helps them achieve more in all academic pursuits.”
Data shows a child’s economic future can be predicted as early as kindergarten and Dr. Nagrath’s company hopes to dramatically influence the future of children around the world.
The education app is a game-changer for kids of all ages, but Dr. Nagrath says it’s important children master basic math concepts early. Studies show four out of five students start kindergarten unprepared for the curriculum and students that start behind tend to stay behind. According to the National Institute for Early Childhood Education 75% of high school students are not proficient at high school mathematics.
“Empowering every child through mathematics is how we’ll break this cycle,” said Dr. Nagrath.
The solution to the math education problem begins with accurately measuring and understanding what a child already knows. Elephant Learning uses a placement exam to determine a student’s initial level of understanding. Assessing what a student knows, and where the gaps exist, allows Elephant Learning to continually adapt to a child’s progression. Parents and teachers can monitor student’s real-time results in a detailed report.
“My eight-year-old son was struggling with basic addition and subtraction,” said Dallas Cooper. “He started with an ‘elephant age’ of 7.6 years and is now at 9.5 years. I’ve seen first-hand how it correlates to his performance in his math curriculum. What used to be a chore is now an absolute joy for both of us!”
Parents pay a single, low monthly tuition for up to seven children. Elephant Learning is so committed to empowering all children through mathematics they’ve teamed with Math Matters who offers merit-based scholarships. They’ve donated more than 80,000 scholarships, including 400 scholarships to students at Aurora Public Schools.
Knowing that a student's success in math is intimately tied to their teacher, the company recently launched a system for teachers to manage their entire classroom on a single dashboard. The service is free, providing resources and teaching materials to help get students to the highest level of understanding. “We hope our service will go a long way in helping overburdened front-line teachers,” said Dr. Nagrath.
