(Centennial, CO) – In the midst of this busy, hectic, commercial time of year, it’s nice to cultivate opportunities to celebrate the true spirit of the season. One such opportunity will be offered by Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on Friday, December 1 at 7 pm when they celebrate their festival of Advent Lessons & Carols. This seasonal offering is part of their Music with a Mission Concert Series which raises funds and awareness for worthy causes. The concert is free to the community, and a “love offering” will be collected with all funds going to Family Tree – House of Hope, an Englewood shelter supporting homeless women and their children.
The program will begin with a candlelight procession and will include music and readings about the coming of the Messiah in order to prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. The Good Shepherd Choir will be joined by vocal soloists, bell choir, men’s choir, and instrumentalists. The music will range from chant and traditional anthems, to gospel music and familiar congregational hymns. Advent Lessons & Carols was originally celebrated at King’s College in England many years ago and is still part of many Anglican holiday traditions.
House of Hope's basic goal is to provide food, shelter and a safe environment to the ever-increasing number of homeless families. Families work with the staff and a variety of community agencies to complete the goals outlined in their plans, which often include applying for housing programs, getting children into school and daycare, obtaining employment, achieving a GED, or attending a job training program. During their stay they also have the opportunity to meet individually with an on-site therapist and also attend life-skills workshops.
The Music with a Mission Concert Series is in its third season, and has raised to date over $22,000 for both local, national and international mission organizations.
