Eddie Powell, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southwest Suburban Denver Water and Sanitation District, was named one of four winners of the Special District Association of Colorado’s 2017 Board Member of the Year Award.
The Special District Association of Colorado (SDA) presents this award annually to a special district board member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and service to their district. This year the remarkable contributions of the nominees resulted in a four-way tie for the Board Member of the Year Award. The awards were presented at the SDA Annual Awards Luncheon as part of the SDA Annual Conference which was held September 13-15 in Keystone, Colorado.
Powell has served on the District’s Board for 31 years. While on the Board, Powell has successfully maintained a balanced budget, improved the financial position of the District with increased reserves, and has completed a 25 year capital improvement and financial plan which will allow the District to fund capital improvements at more than $4 million. In an attempt to prevent sewer backups, Powell has also led the District’s work to inspect every home in the District for sump pump installations that were illegally discharging into the District’s sanitary sewer system. Moreover, Powell has championed the District’s efforts to provide ongoing communication with the District’s customers through annual newsletters and a District website where customers have the ability to make online payments and are kept informed about Board meetings, construction projects, budgets, and rate hearings. Powell is well-known within the District and communicates easily with customers. His compassion and willingness to listen to alternative views and ideas can be seen in all that he does for the District.
Ann Terry, SDA’s Executive Director, was thrilled to recognize the exceptional work of Powell. “Eddie is a very deserving winner of this award, and we are pleased for the opportunity to honor him and the extraordinary contributions he has made to his district.”
