After an extensive and very competitive tryout process, Michael J. Boyd has been selected to race with Team USA in the IDBF Dragon Boat World Championships in Welland, Ontario this August. For dragon boaters, this is the pinnacle event - the equivalent of what the Olympic games represents to more conventional sports. This marks the first time a paddler from Colorado has ever been selected for a Team USA World Championship crew. Boyd, and the Phantom Dragons team he coaches, train locally on Lake Arbor and at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center.
Racing with Team USA is a huge honor, but also a very expensive undertaking. The crew’s summer training calendar includes a 5-day training camp in Florida at the end of this month, followed by a June tune-up race in Ontario. Each of these activities has significant associated costs, and Team USA athletes we are required to pay all of their own travel, lodging and other expenses.
To help defray some of these expenses, a RallyMe crowdfunding site has been set up at the link below.
