The Founding Families and Board of Directors of Apex Community School would like to invite the Castle Rock community to the groundbreaking ceremony for Apex Community School on Sunday, October 15th at 5:30pm at 2830 Distant Rock Ave. in Castle Rock. We welcome the community to begin gathering at 5:00 pm to walk our “Orange Carpet,” be a part of pictures and commemorative festivities. We are proud to announce the theme for the ground breaking: “Apex…A Blue Print for Success!”
Apex is breaking ground on Phase I of a new Kindergarten through sixth grade facility to serve the growing capacity needs in the Meadow. Please join us in this celebration of the culmination of three years of hard work and the beginning of many more years serving the Castle Rock community! Along with a brief ceremony, there will be “construction activities” for kids that include turning dirt with their own shovels, a time to “Touch a Construction Truck,” a very large sand pit to play in and an aerial group picture via the construction drone! For those interested in learning more about the school, there will be an informational meeting at 4:00pm at the Taft House and Pool (across from the Apex building site) prior to the ground breaking.
Recommended to the Douglas County Board of Education by the District’s Charter Application Review Team (CART), Apex Community School received a unanimous, bipartisan vote to approve their charter application. Apex has since secured a low interest $12 million-dollar municipal bond to finance construction and will be ready to open its doors in August of 2018!
“Apex will provide over 500 more openings for students, initially opening for Kindergarten through 6th grades and eventually serving PK-8th” said Mark Welle, Chair of the Board of Apex. At capacity, Apex Community School will accommodate over 750.
“We are a ‘grass roots effort in that our Board is largely comprised of Douglas County residents whose children attended or are attending Douglas County schools, both neighborhood and charter.” said Todd Slechta, Treasurer of the Board. “We are not part of an educational management organization or national charter organization. In fact, our construction company (Franzen-Pittman) is from Douglas County and our architectural firm (Hord-Coplin-Macht) is based in Denver.”
“Community is in our name for a reason” said Lori Parker, Secretary of the Board. “The Apex Board of Directors is committed to the community we live within and we are concerned with keeping Colorado dollars in Colorado to the benefit of those for whom these funds are intended, namely our children and families.”
Many of the Apex board members were previously part of a successful start-up and operation of a K-8 charter school in the Denver Metro area, moving the school from the lowest tier of standardized student growth and academic achievement to one of the highest in its district.
The mission of Apex Community School is to provide an innovative and inclusive learning community which welcomes the breadth of student population, regardless of ability, socio-economic background, and/or language proficiency.
Apex’s model will provide students with rigorous, research-based curricula selected for their proven effectiveness. The curriculum includes:
•Core Knowledge Scope and Sequence
•Core Knowledge Language Arts
•A phonemic based approach to literacy
•Jump Mathematics, and
•An integrated liberal arts program (Music, Art and Physical Education)
•A literature-based and integrated character education program
Parent/guardians will have the opportunity to enroll their child(ren) in Apex Community School during the District’s upcoming Open Enrollment Window that runs from November 1st through December 1st. To receive regular information from Apex about enrollment, community information meetings and general questions, parent/guardians are encouraged to go to the Apex Community School website at www.ApexSchool.co and complete a quick interest survey. Additionally, community members are invited to join the Apex Board of Directors for an informal Meet and Greet, every second Tuesday of the month, to learn more about Apex.
The Apex Board of Directors looks forward to partnering with Castle Rock families in the education of their child(ren). Join us on October 15. Everyone is welcome!
