GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo., Feb. 7, 2013 — Great-West FinancialSM is proud to announce that applications are now being accepted for its Great-West Great-Teachers®financial literacy grant initiative, a signature community support program that promotes financial education among students and funds teacher’s instruction in Colorado’s P-12 schools.
Great-West Financial introduced the grant initiative in 2011. Since then, the company has encouraged teachers statewide to apply for a $5,000 grant. Great-West Financial has provided a total of $250,000 to teachers since the program’s inception. A team of Great-West Financial and financial literacy experts reviews the applications and selects 25 grant winners each school year.
“As a financial services company, whose mission is to create bright financial futures where retirement is only the beginning, we deeply understand the importance of financial literacy,” said Mitchell Graye, President and CEO of Great-West Financial. “Teaching financial education to students from an early age equips them with the tools and skills they need to achieve their financial goals and to make plans for the future.”
Grants are used to fund supplies, curriculum, technology, professional development, and to initiate other financial education programs in the classroom. Teachers are given great autonomy and flexibility to use the funds as they see fit in order to properly instruct their students.
“With school budgets being stretched to cover the basics, it has been extremely beneficial to have the support of Great-West Financial to teach personal financial literacy,” wrote Karen Bentz, a teacher and grant recipient from Littleton Academy. “It is my feeling that providing this foundation for young children will benefit our society and possibly even the nation’s economy long-term.”
To apply for a grant, or for more information, please visit the Great-West Great-Teachers website at: www.greatwestgreateachers.com. Grant applications for the 2013-14 academic year must be submitted by March 4. Winning applicants will be notified via email by May 7.
Additionally, Great-West Financial supports the Young Americans Center for Financial Education with courses on money matters for youth and their parents, and the Junior Achievement Finance Park, a financial boot camp where students make budgeting, investment and other financial decisions. It also funds the Colorado Council for Economic Education's Stock Market Experience, a free, semester-long investment simulation. This year, Great-West Financial is providing grants to Cherry Creek Public Schools and Jefferson County Public Schools. The funding will be used for professional development for teachers, personal finance curricular development and classroom resources. Great-West Financial plans to partner with new districts each year.
