Are you concerned about a teen’s or child’s behavior, but need more information? How do teachers and parents know when a youth is exhibiting "normal teen behavior" versus something more serious like a mental disorder? If there are concerns, what can be done and what type of help is available? Healing Our Youth: Get Educated! is an educational outreach event designed to help our community become informed about mental health and wellness to better support and heal our community’s strongest asset, our youth.
Healing Our Youth: Get Educated! is a free panel presentation and resource fair for teachers, school staff/administrators, parents, youth workers, and anyone who is interested in helping improve the mental wellness of youth. Our panel is comprised of the former president of NAMI Arapahoe/Douglas Counties (National Alliance on Mental Illness) who presents a personal look at parenting a child with mental illness and some signs of her son’s illness that she missed; a pediatrician, who shares the facts, statistics, and basic biology of mental disorders; a physician, who will discuss teen substance abuse and the effects on a developing brain; a licensed professional counselor, who will discuss how to identify unhealthy adolescent behaviors and the treatments that are available; and a youth, who will share his journey with a mental disorder and inspire hope. Attendees also will have the opportunity to connect with a variety of mental wellness specialists at our resource fair.
Research indicates that there is a great need for more information and education on youth mental health in our community. The lack of mental health education is a big cause of the stigma surrounding mental health. The number of youth with mental health and substance use issues and the rate of suicide have increased over the past several years. There is a need to start talking about mental health because the stakes are too high to ignore it any longer. The organizers at Healing Our Youth: Get Educated! invite you to set aside an evening to come and get educated on youth mental health. You won't be disappointed and it may be one of the most valuable and important events you attend all year.
